Ibn Sharif Shakoor is an American Hip Hop recording artist, songwriter and poet from Jersey City, New Jersey. He is best known for his soulful lyrics along with powerful, creative music videos directed by him and business partner Lorenzo Pickett. Synopsis Ibn Sharif Shakoor, who performs under his birth name, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on March 11, 1986. After playing the trumpet as a child, Ibn began to explore into the world of poetry. His early writings were a reflection of his dysfunctional upbringing. Ibn continues to create music that touches the soul while demonstrating a keen ability to strategically piece words together in conjunction with melodic hooks, in search of an opportunity that will allow his music to reach the masses.
He cites his influences as rappers Nas; The Lox; Tupac Shakur; Jay-z; Method man; and the Notorious B.I.G.. Early Life Ibn Sharif Shakoor was born to Pamela Crayton and Sharif Shakoor. Around Ibn’s third birthday, his father Sharif was sentenced to eight years in prison. By the time Ibn turned five years old, his mother Pamela became addicted to both crack and heroin. He lived with his great- grandmother who was a pianist and writer until her death when he was in the sixth grade. The foundation laid by his great- grandmother influenced Ibn to become an excellent student and superb writer. Ibn was directly touched by witnessing his mother abuse drugs, often experiencing late-night convocations on dangerous street corners filled with violence. As a natural born artist an observer, Ibn turned to the likes of Method man as a source of inspiration, and outlet from the harsh realities of life. At age nine, Ibn began to write raps while listening to Wu-Tang and Tupac albums that he secretly dubbed on cassette tapes from his friends. In 2004, He released his first mix tape titled “ It’s Been War”. It was released locally to mixed feedback due to some of its conscience content; nevertheless it earned him attention and respect amongst his rap peers. In 2006, Ibn released a second mix tape titled “ Poetic Justice, and another in 2015 titled “ 1986”. His latest projects display versatility while maintaining his lyrical and soulful integrity.
